The friend I told everything to
What happened after I shared every secret with one close friend, and the rule I live by now: a secret you have told is no longer a secret.
- We all have secrets and we always want to have someone with whom we can share the secrets. Friends share secrets, that’s what keeps them close. I had one such close friend and we used to share all our secrets. Whether it be about liking someone, a crush or any other things, we never hesitated to share those secrets with each other. One day, she told me that she knows all the things about me. I said, no, these days, I don’t know why, but I don’t like to share anything with anyone. I have become somewhat of an introvert. She was disappointed when she heard this and slowly stopped sharing stuff with me. I was an idiot.
Lesson learnt: If you have at least one such friend with whom you can share ANYTHING then consider yourself lucky. Don’t break the trust of that person. If your friend is sharing secrets with you then consider reciprocating and sharing your secrets with her/him. Never even think of using those secrets against anyone. Always respect that person, be reliable and show some sincerity. Listen intently and do not make fun of her/his feelings.
- I am lucky enough to have many friends with whom I can share secrets. I had one such friend, we had become close friends in a very short interval of time. Unknowingly, we started sharing personal things with each other. At one point, I do not know why but I felt like I should check whether she is honest and trustworthy enough and whether she is considering me as a close friend or not. I knew one thing about her, so when the discussion was in a flow, I asked about that thing and when she responded I got to know that she was lying. From then, I stopped sharing the secrets with her.
Note: I am not saying that another person should share all the things, it all depends on the comfort zone. So do not take the above example in a wrong way.
While sharing the secrets, you should always take care about whether another person is trustworthy or not. Always ponder on whether he/she can use those secrets against you. Your worst enemy could be the person who knows all the things about you. If someone is sharing his/her secrets with you; you should honour them and not use them against anyone.
Whether we should share secrets or not is up to us. Remember, “If you share a secret with anyone, it’s not a secret anymore”.
